I make no effort to hide the fact that my politics lean pretty heavily liberal. If you need any proof of that, take a look at my opinion on the ethics of torture. So tonight’s MSNBC debate should be required viewing for me. But I’m not watching. It’s just too much. Familiarity has bred contempt as the saying goes.
There’s just too much campaigning! It’s out of hand. Hillary Clinton has been running for president for the last 6 years. Even Barack Obama has been running since he made the “Speech Heard ‘Round the World” in 2004.
Now I’m no Anglophile and I don’t yearn for a parliamentary system, but I could really do with some of those 3 and 4 week campaigns that British snap elections force. Can’t you tell me everything I need to know about you within a few weeks? Do I really need to hear you say it to every single last interest group that can gather more than 15 people in the same room?
I’m sure Hillary Clinton is going to be indignant tonight after pitching a fit this week about some Obama campaign mailings. And I’m sure Barack Obama is going to be equally incensed that Clinton’s camp circulated photos of him in traditional Kenyan attire. But I couldn’t care less. Politics is a dirty business. It gets even dirtier when you stretch it out over a period of two years.
My thesis adviser in college once told me, “If you can’t tell me what your paper is about in one sentence then it’s not about anything.” I think the same thing about politics and therefore I beg for an end to the endless debates. Just be quiet already and let the people vote.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a date with some veggie fried rice and “30 Days of Night” On Demand.
